Gimme some of your tots!

B52 Pocket Tots Strawberry Milkshake is an odd bird, but I can see why everyone was clamoring over it. When news first dropped of the release, I was instantly skeptical, “What’s percentage of the grain bill is the tots?” It makes sense that they’d go super creative when honoring a movie that was so memorable because it was so odd.

Another entry into their Cult Classic Series, B52 Pocket Tots Strawberry Milkshake is another winner. They’ve managed to tie together great beer and nostalgia with a creative new beer. UPGRAYEDD (with Two D’s) was one of my favs for obvious reasons, but this one’s legit too.

You won’t find the label on any shelves, but it features a painterly image of Napoleon Dynamite reaching into his cargo pocket for some tasty tots. The rest of the label is blue, hot pink and yellow, and it features the same text from the VOTE PEDRO shirts – the typeface is called Cooper Black. Although you probably don’t care, I sure do.

If all this Pedro stuff has you confused because you you haven’t seen the movie before, here’s the scene. Also, go see the movie.

I can’t lie. I was a bit thrown off when I poured it, despite seeing it on IG plenty of times before busting open my can. B52 Pocket Tots Strawberry Milkshake poured a kind of dark, orangey-brown with a light white head that melted quickly.

I was even more surprised by the smell. It reminded me of straight strawberry air fresheners. You know, those red and white tree ones that smell great on day one and like cardboard by day 7.

She’s uh… she’s got sandy blonde hair. She’s uh… pretty good looking face, but I’m just getting really… just kinda TO’d because… I mean she hasn’t even sent me a full body shot yet. JK. The body’s nice and creamy. These tots definitely don’t taste like 8%. It starts off smooth and silky from the milk sugar, and finishes with a mild bitterness of a little bit of grapefruit and a ton of strawberries. The carbonation is light and balanced well with the creaminess. There’s a loooong finish of strawberry aromas that linger.

I drank this at Christmas with my family, and everybody wanted to try it. My grandma (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc.), mom (BMC) and uncle (Shiner Bock) all loved it. They were all a bit put off by the idea of tots, but the nose pulled them right in. Big thanks to Hannah for grabbing a few for me. I was able to segway B52 Pocket Tots Strawberry Milkshake into a straight up craft beer tasting with my family, and I was pleased at the results.

We always try and compare something local or something easy to find, but there’s no comparison here. Duh. *Very deep, emphatic, exaggerated sigh* The regular version is fire too, but also duh.

I hear this one’s gonna be making a come back, but if you haven’t had it by now, you’re gonna have to find it at B52.

B52 Pocket Tots Strawberry Milkshake

I feel a little silly for doubting this one, but I’ve said it before. I’m always happy to be wrong. These Pocket Tots are solid. B52 has been getting really funky and really creative. It’s working. I know there were some haters saying this was a gimmick, but I guess I’d like to ask, where’s the line between creative and gimmick? I mean, it’s not like they put pizza or money in the beer. Maybe that’s a write up for another day?
