Citra Mellow IPA is my first beer from Galveston Island Brewing. It’s very mild – it’d be a killer beer for the beach! Very mellow to start, hop bitterness to finish. Slight floral notes along with a sneaky high ABV. A very good intro to IPAs as it not very hoppy/bitter in comparison. Citra Mellow IPA is an easy drinking, all day type of beer.
You must’ve seen the Corona commercials where they’re walking in a city like New York, and once they walk into a bar and take the first sip of a Corona, they’re suddenly at the beach with friends? THAT IS LITERALLY HOW THIS BEER TATSES! Taste wise, it’s nothing at all like Corona, obviously – but that’s the feeling I get when I drink this beer, like I’m sitting on a beach without a care in the world.
I gave Citra Mellow IPA a 3 and a half rating because it’s sandwiched in between good and great. It’s realllllly smooth and holds true to it’s mellow name, but since I really enjoy big hops it’s little too mellow to be great, in my opinion. I don’t think you have to be a West Coast style IPA to be great, but it just needs to be more present than it is.
Citra Mellow IPA has a good mouthfeel, nice full tan head, good lacing all the way through the beer with a golden brown body.
Citra Mellow is exactly what I thought it would be. It’s as laid back as a beach bum. When I pictured Galveston Island Brewing, this is exactly what I expected, high quality beer that you could enjoy walking down the Seawall.
Artwork on the Citra Mellow IPA can is yellow and green, and on the front it’s slightly tie dye looking/70’s with waves going around the top of the can. It has a very “beach house” feel to the artwork. I also like that the added “Drink responsible. Drink local.” Always remember to drink local!
Cans were only at the brewery when we got them, but they can be found in several coastal establishments making their way closer and closer to downtown Houston. They’ll go as far Northwest as the Specs downtown eventually, but they won’t last. I’m sure bars will pick it up too. Galveston Island Brewing does a good job of keeping a list on their site – here’s some places that carry their beer currently. You might wanna check ahead to see if they have Citra Mellow IPA, though.
This beer is really good, borderline great! It’s got a good ABV and yet it’s very smooth. Works perfectly on a summer day at the beach! Have you sipped this magnificent brew or are you pondering making the trip to G town? Let us know where you stand!
