Houston brought home a single medal this year. Anything is better than nothing, but it does demonstrate the increasingly high level of competition at the national festival.
The Great American Beer Festival, fondly AKA GABF, is like the world’s biggest competition and celebration for the craft beer nerds like us. In the midst of so many different craft beer competitions, GABF stands proudly at the top of the food chain in both prestige and scale. It’s an annual festival that unfolds right in the heart of Denver, Colorado, drawing a waves of craft beer fans who eagerly await the results, both on-site and in the virtual realm, as local heroes beeroes strive to bring home the hardware.
New Magnolia brought home their second in three years as Houston fav Heights Light Lager snagged the second spot for a shiny silver in the Light Lager category.
Hazy, juicy, and IPAs in general continued to show no signs of slowing down. These categories dominate tap walls, distribution shelves, and awards submissions. However, Pilsner and Märzen creeped up into the top 5 most entered style categories echoing growing trends for more regular, beer-flavored beer.
It’s been since 2009 that Houston only brought home a single medal, but next year, we’ll get a few more!

As we come to the close, GABF turned out to be awesome although we didn’t bring home as much hardware as expected! Maybe this will encourage more Houston breweries to submit. We know several joined in the fun
It’s highly recommended to purchase some GABF tickets nice and early. And don’t forget, the city will be packed, so it’s a wise decision to get those flight and lodging arrangements squared away well ahead of time.
